Reader’s Question:

I am a US citizen, and I have a house and a car in Mexico. My car has Mexican insurance. Can I buy short-term car insurance here in California if I wanted to bring the car in this state?

Margaret

Alameda, CA

Car insurance companies in the United States, and the State of California is not an exception, do not generally offer short auto insurance policy terms. So, you may have a hard time finding car insurance coverage from a normal insurance provider that would give you coverage for just a couple of days or weeks.

However, there are a lot of specialty car insurance providers in this state that would offer you such a short period of coverage. Those that specialize in border insurance are the kind of car insurance providers that you want to seek out for this situation. This kind of insurance allows US drivers to drive into Mexico with the mandated Mexican insurance coverage. Likewise, there is also a coverage that would allow a Mexican driver to drive into the United States and still be covered if something untoward happens in the road and he or she gets involved in an accident.

But before you start looking for these companies, you might want to check with your current Mexican car insurance provider because they might be able to provide you with coverage for the short time that you travel to California. If your Mexican insurer does not provide you with such coverage, do some shopping around. Check the websites of insurance companies that specialize in border insurance.

Auto Insurance Minimum Requirements California CA

Reader’s Question:

I just moved here in California. What are the minimum requirements for a California Auto Insurance?

Jeremy

Los Angeles, CA

Like all states in America, California has made it mandatory for every driver to have auto liability insurance. Liability covers for the expenses incurred resulting from accidents or mishaps. These include the cost of medical treatment and/or hospitalization to treat injuries, and the cost of repairs done to the other motorist’s vehicle struck by the insured.

The minimum level of coverage for medical expenses is 15 thousand dollars if there was only one occupant in the vehicle, and a total of 30 thousand dollars for combined medical expenses of all occupants in the vehicle, while an amount of 5 thousand dollars is allotted to cover for property damages, including automobile repair.

Liability does not cover repairs done to or replacement of the insured driver’s car if the insured is at fault in the accident. This is where collision and comprehensive insurance comes into the picture. This is what you need to take care of the damage on your car. Collision and comprehensive insurance not only covers costs resulting from accidents, but also allows the insured to have necessary repairs done to their vehicle at their insurance provider’s expense. Although collision and comprehensive insurance is not required in the State of California, it is strongly recommended.
